Roma: frequently asked questions

09/02/2026
What is a domestic water softener for?
A water softener is a solution designed to reduce water hardness by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions, which are responsible for the formation of limescale, with sodium ions through special resins.
How does holiday mode work?
The holiday mode keeps the softener's resins performing at all times and prevents the proliferation of bacteria, even when you are away from home for a long time. Once the function is activated, ROMA performs a 3-minute backwash and a 3-minute rinse if no water is detected after 7 days. Washing will take place automatically at the programmed time, by default every 7 days at 2:00 am.
My water hardness is above 50°f, what should I do?
In this case, it is important to choose the most suitable solution. Contact Atlas Filtri Customer Care: they will suggest the right solution for your needs.

For quicker support, have the following at hand:

How often should the ROMA softener be cleaned?
To keep ROMA always efficient and in perfect aesthetic and operational condition, regular maintenance is recommended.
  • Brine vat cleaning: every 6/12 months depending on the quality and purity of the salt used
  • External cleaning: with a neutral soap-based solution; avoid abrasive detergents, ammonia, or solvents

ROMA is connected to the power mains, so disconnect it before any work.

Do the resins in the Roma softener have to be cleaned?
Resins allow ion exchange and are periodically regenerated by brine. Their lifespan depends on water quality and regeneration cycles.

Resin Clean is a fast-acting system effective against dissolved iron, unwanted discoloration, unpleasant tastes and odors.
Can very dirty water damage ROMA?
Water quality affects performance. Installing the Hydra Mini Roma filter upstream (included) is mandatory to protect ROMA and other equipment such as boilers.
How do I load salt into the Roma water softener?
Roma uses the Eas'In push-to-open system.
  • Carefully read the manual
  • Fill the container halfway to avoid salt bridging
  • Use salt tablets compliant with UNI EN 973:2009
  • Avoid non-specific salt
What if the power fails?
Thanks to LEVEE, you can connect a 9V battery (not included) to complete regeneration during power failure.
What is the red LED for?
The red LED signals low salt levels, allowing timely intervention.
Do you need a connection to the sewage system to install a water softener?
Yes. After rinsing, brine must be conveyed to a drain or sewer. Without this connection, the softener cannot operate safely.
Is Roma an Italian product?
Yes. ROMA is designed and manufactured entirely in Italy, guaranteeing Made in Italy quality.
Is softened water safe to drink?
Yes. It complies with EU Drinking Water Directive 2184/2020 and only removes limescale.
